Every batch of flanges produced at our facility undergoes Positive Material Identification (PMI) testing — an instrument-based chemical composition analysis that confirms the exact elemental makeup of each material heat before it leaves our factory.
What Is PMI Testing?
PMI (Positive Material Identification) is a non-destructive or micro-destructive testing method used to verify the chemical composition of metals and alloys. Using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) or optical emission spectrometry (OES), PMI instruments can identify and quantify the major alloying elements in a material sample within seconds.
Our PMI Process — Step by Step
Step 1: Surface Grinding The flange surface is ground to remove oxidation, scale, and coating — exposing fresh, unoxidized base metal for an accurate reading.
Step 2: Cooling The ground sample is allowed to cool completely. Residual heat from grinding can affect spectrometer readings, so temperature stabilization is essential for accurate results.
Step 3: Surface Cleaning The test area is wiped clean to remove grinding debris, oil, and any surface contamination that could interfere with the instrument reading.
Step 4: Spectrometer Analysis The sample is placed in contact with our PMI analyzer. The instrument fires an X-ray or spark at the metal surface and measures the energy spectrum of the returning radiation — identifying and quantifying each element present.
Step 5: Results Verification Chemical composition results are displayed instantly on screen. Our quality control team compares each element — Carbon (C), Silicon (Si), Manganese (Mn), Chromium (Cr), Molybdenum (Mo), Nickel (Ni), Vanadium (V) and others — against the material specification and mill certificate.
Only batches that pass PMI verification proceed to final inspection and shipment.
