Steel that looks right on the outside can still fail — if the internal grain structure is wrong.
At Fulihua Pipeline Equipment, surface inspection is just the beginning. Every batch of flanges we produce undergoes full Metallographic Analysis — a laboratory process that examines the steel's microstructure at the grain level, confirming that the material meets the exact mechanical and structural requirements for high-performance pipeline applications.
What is Metallographic Analysis?
Metallographic Analysis is the scientific examination of a metal's internal microstructure — including grain size, phase distribution, and structural uniformity — using a combination of specimen preparation, chemical etching, microscopy, and digital imaging analysis.
The microstructure of steel directly determines its mechanical properties: strength, toughness, ductility, and resistance to fatigue and fracture. By examining the microstructure, engineers can verify that the steel will perform as expected under real pipeline conditions.
Our 6-Step Process
🔹 Step 1 — Grinding A specimen is cut from the flange material and ground through progressively finer abrasive paper — from coarse to fine — removing surface damage and creating a perfectly flat base for polishing.
🔹 Step 2 — Polishing The specimen is placed on a rotating polishing wheel with a fine abrasive suspension, achieving a mirror-smooth, completely scratch-free surface. Only a flawless surface reveals what lies beneath.
🔹 Step 3 — Etching A chemical etchant is carefully applied to the polished surface. Different phases and grain boundaries react at different rates — slowly revealing the steel's hidden internal structure.
🔹 Step 4 — Drying Immediately after etching, the specimen is rinsed and dried under a cold air stream — stopping the chemical reaction at exactly the right moment and preserving the microstructure in perfect condition.
🔹 Step 5 — Microscope Examination The prepared specimen is examined under a high-magnification metallographic microscope. Our technician carefully adjusts focus and magnification to bring the grain structure into sharp, clear view.
🔹 Step 6 — Digital Analysis Professional imaging software captures the microstructure and measures grain size, phase distribution, and structural uniformity — producing fully documented, traceable laboratory results for every production batch.
